previous cr: Nein.

history: All her life, Deuce has lived in an underground enclave called College. Stories of a time when humanity lived above ground perpetuate below, but she never placed much stock in them. Instead, she focused on her goal of becoming a huntress.

On her fifteenth birthday, all her hopes are answered. Until she's partnered up with Fade. He tests her as more than a skilled huntress. He tests her heart, her humanity, and her unwavering faith in her enclave.

While out scouting for meat, she and Fade come across a young, blind boy. He has news about a Freak invasion in a nearby enclave. Despite the first person account of the attacks, the Elders choose to discard the news, claiming their defenses and hygiene and strong enough. Even after Fade and Deuce are sent on a reconnaissance mission, no one chooses to believe them.

From there, things escalate. As is yearly tradition, the Elders choose one person to blame for hoarding. It's a stark reminder of the rules: if you break them, you will be thrown out for the Freaks. This time, it's one of Deuce's friends. She can't let him be blamed and instead claims it is her own. Fade doesn't let her go alone. Together, they make the journey towards Topside.

There, she learns that everything she has been told is a lie. The sun doesn't kill her, the rain doesn't burn, the air is breathable. And people survive up there. And a whole host of challenges await her. Down below isn't the only place where Freaks reside. They're smart up top, too.

personality: At first, Deuce is very enclave-minded. She knows everything is done for the enclave's survival. Food is rationed, positions given. In order to survive, rules must be in place. She follows them blindly, her ambition to be a huntress the only thing she cares about. She longs to be accepted, respected, and find a place she belongs.

When she's made a huntress, it's one of the happiest days of her life. She would be out there finding food for the people, staving off freak attacks, and showing her worth. Until she meets her partner, she is floating on cloud nine. He's the boy who doesn't quite fit in.

She's resolute on proving she's meant to be a hunter. If she lets any slip of emotion through her tough façade, people think she's too soft and state maybe she'd be better as a breeder. To Deuce, this is a great insult. It forces herself to clamp down on her sensitive side and project a tougher exterior.

At least, until Fade starts to introduce her to a new way of thinking. On a routine sweep, they find a young, blind boy. She knows it would be death to leave him out there so she suggests taking him back. However, the elders look down on such deformities. They take the boy to do. Despite every fiber of her being, she can't will herself to tell them to stop.

This starts a change within her life. Fade helps her see a different way of thinking, one that is less hive-minded. She sees the truth of the enclave and begins to question it. Not everything is as black and white as she once thought.

Fade awakens a new side, one she tried to shove down past the gritty determination of a huntress. Emotions she once thought of as breeder traits, she learns to embrace. There is a still a fire to her, but she's learning that having a heart isn't a bad thing.

She's smart and trained in the way of hunting. She's practiced without sight and knows how to count steps to get her bearings straight. Her skills are refined, but without much actual application. Still, she's proud of her abilities.

Topside, she fights with the knowledge she's been fed her entire life and the actuality of the world above. It's a lot of mystery and holds a lot of fear. There is wide open space and enemies unknown. She isn't used to the sounds and it makes her jumpy.

Underneath her tough exterior, she is attracted to shiny objects and new things. There is a wide eyed wonderer deep within her heart she has suppressed for many years. She keeps many things secret, hesitant to share who she actually is. In the enclave, she was her scars. Without that hierarchy, she is trying to find herself.

abilities/powers: Very talented huntress. Sneaky, strong, agile.

Not used to sunlight. At all. Or buildings. Or other people. Or anything.

first person sample: [Deuce doesn't understand this contraption. There were a few broken remnants, but none that looked this complete. She's been pressing buttons and has accidentally turned the video function on. She doesn't realize it and continues to move it about.] I've never seen anything like this before. Maybe if I could find Fade, he'd know what it was. [She shakes it, then notices the screen. Her voice is slow and stilted as she reads.] Re-cord-ing. Does this mean it's working? Of what use is this device if it won't tell me anything. [Still, she recognizes its value and returns it to her pocket. She's used to saving things for the Wordkeeper. Or for Fade. Her heart skips at the thought of him.]

third person sample: Once she'd found her way through the maze of corridors and to a door, Deuce paused to listen. The surroundings were different than the topside she recognized. She felt far removed from the city Fade had shown her and even further from the only life she'd known. Stripped of her clothes and her weapons, she was wary of where she was and how she wound up there.

The thin shift let the coolness of the air touch her skin. Before she found a place to rest, she would have to find some clothing. She doubted there would be anything she was used to. If she was lucky, she might come across something akin to those bulky tops that Fade had found.

Her gaze scanned the street. There were too few people and animals. Silence loomed around her. At least it was night. She was most comfortable with the darkness hugging her. She moved through shadows as she made her way down the row of buildings. Keen eyes checked each window to see if they held anything of interest for her.

She watched for territorial markings, wondering what kinds of gangers lurked in the alleyways. There were many questions on her mind, none of which she could answer. How she wished Fade was here to provide them for her. He took her from the only world she'd known and given her so many things to learn. She wasn't sure she'd ever finish discovering new information.
